Traumatic Injury in Decatur, AL

A traumatic dental injury refers to physical damage to the teeth, mouth, or surrounding structures caused by accidents, sports injuries, or other impacts. These injuries can range from minor chips and cracks to more severe cases like dislodged teeth or avulsed (knocked out) teeth. Prompt evaluation and treatment are critical to saving the affected teeth and preventing complications. At Price-Denton Endodontics, Drs. Stephen Price and Jonathan Denton treat traumatic dental injuries with advanced care aimed at restoring both function and aesthetics. Contact our office in Decatur, AL for prompt, precise dental trauma care.

Treatment for dental injuries depends on the type and severity of the trauma. Minor injuries such as chipped or cracked teeth may be repaired with bonding or veneers, while more serious cases like dislodged teeth often require repositioning and stabilization with a splint. If the tooth’s pulp is damaged, root canal therapy may be necessary to prevent infection and preserve the tooth. Avulsed teeth, or those completely knocked out, require immediate care — ideally within 30 – 60 minutes — to attempt reimplantation. Follow-up care is essential to monitor healing and ensure long-term success of the treatment.

After receiving treatment for a traumatic dental injury, patients can expect a recovery period that varies depending on the severity of the trauma. Mild injuries may heal within a few weeks, while more complex cases, such as reimplanted teeth, may require several months of monitoring. During this time, Drs. Price and Denton will schedule follow-up appointments to assess healing, check for signs of infection, and ensure the tooth is responding well to treatment. Patients may be advised to follow a soft food diet, practice careful oral hygiene, and avoid contact sports or activities that could risk further injury. In some cases, additional treatments such as a dental crown or further root canal therapy may be recommended to fully restore the tooth's function and appearance.

Dr. Denton is amazing! After being told I needed my first ever root canal, my dentist attempted to do it but couldn’t get my tooth numb. I was then referred to Dr. Denton who was able to numb my tooth with little to no pain from the numbing shots. With this being my first root canal, Dr. Denton made this super easy, painless, and I was even out of the office within 30 minutes! 10/10 recommend!

Even when damage seems minor, prompt evaluation is important because injuries involving the teeth, jaw, or surrounding tissues may worsen if left untreated. During your consultation, our team will assess the extent of your injury, evaluate nearby structures, and develop a personalized treatment plan designed to restore both function and appearance whenever possible. You may be a candidate for traumatic injury treatment if you:

  • Have a chipped, broken, or knocked-out tooth
  • Have facial swelling or significant oral pain after an injury
  • Notice changes in your bite or jaw movement
  • Have bleeding or lacerations inside the mouth
  • Suspect a jaw or facial bone injury
  • Have loose teeth following an accident
  • Need treatment after a sports-related injury
  • Require evaluation after facial trauma

Some traumatic injuries require immediate treatment to improve the chances of saving teeth or preventing long-term complications. Seeking prompt care gives our team the best opportunity to restore your oral health as effectively as possible.

What should I do with my tooth that got knocked out until I can get to the endodontist?

Act quickly, but try to stay calm. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse it if needed without scrubbing. If you can, place it back into the socket. If not, keep it in milk or saliva to prevent it from drying out. Time is critical in these situations, so getting to our team as soon as possible gives the best chance of saving the tooth.

What types of traumatic dental injuries are considered emergencies?

Any injury that involves a knocked-out tooth, a severe fracture, significant pain, or uncontrolled bleeding should be treated as an emergency. These situations can worsen quickly if not addressed right away. If you are unsure, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Our team can evaluate the injury promptly and determine the best course of action.

Will I be awake during treatment for a traumatic dental injury?

In many cases, yes, but the area will be fully numbed so you do not feel pain. Depending on the severity of the injury or your comfort level, sedation may also be an option. Our team will talk through your options and make sure you feel supported and comfortable throughout treatment.

How can I manage pain from a dental injury?

To manage pain, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, but avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek can also help reduce swelling and numb the area. It is important to seek professional care as soon as possible in Decatur, AL, to address the root cause of the pain.

Will I need a root canal after a traumatic dental injury?

A root canal is not always required, but it is common if the pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected due to the trauma. Dr. Price or Dr. Denton will perform a thorough evaluation to check the health and vitality of the injured tooth's nerve. If treatment is necessary, this procedure will help prevent infection and ultimately preserve your natural tooth.

How do you manage pain during and after the treatment?

We utilize advanced local anesthetics and gentle techniques to ensure you remain completely comfortable and pain-free during your procedure. Afterward, Dr. Price or Dr. Denton will provide personalized instructions on managing temporary discomfort with over-the-counter or prescription medications. Most patients find that any post-treatment soreness resolves quickly within a few days of resting.

Can a chipped or cracked tooth cause problems later if left untreated?

Yes, even a minor chip or crack can lead to bigger problems if not addressed. The damaged area can weaken the tooth, making it more susceptible to further fracture, and may expose the inner layers to bacteria, leading to decay or infection. Prompt treatment at Price-Denton Endodontics helps restore the tooth's strength and prevent future complications.

Will my treatment for a dental injury be painful?

We prioritize your comfort and use local anesthesia to numb the area so you don't feel pain during the procedure. Dr. Price and Dr. Denton are experienced in gentle and effective techniques to manage any discomfort. You may experience some mild soreness after the treatment, which can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

What happens if a traumatic dental injury is left untreated?

Ignoring even a seemingly minor injury can lead to severe complications, including chronic pain, deep infections, and eventual tooth loss. Over time, untreated damage to the internal blood vessels and nerves can cause the tooth to discolor and die. Our team at Price-Denton Endodontics can prevent these long-term issues by identifying and treating hidden damage early.
